Leadership Foundations

Diagram outlining fundamentals for new NHS leaders within the NHS Leadership & Management Framework.

Why is this course important?

The most dangerous leader is an insecure one.

Promoting people into leadership without giving them the skills and confidence to lead effectively, is dangerous to their team and therefore their patients.

Assumptions around leadership skills, confidence and capabilities can be deadly.

Head knowledge with an MSc is great, but they also need the practical leadership skills and confidence. That's where we come in.

By the end of the 2-day programme, participants will be able to:

  1. Lead from a place of confidence in their strengths. Develop a clear understanding of their unique strengths as a leader, enabling them to show up with greater confidence, make sound decisions under pressure, and contribute more effectively to patient care and team performance.
  2. Develop emotional intelligence to lead effectively under pressure. Recognise and manage their own emotions, respond with empathy to others, and remain calm and effective in high-pressure clinical situations, strengthening trust and team relationships.
  3. Delegate with clarity and confidence. Confidently assign the right tasks to the right people, ensuring clear expectations, accountability, and safe, effective patient care.
  4. Deliver feedback that improves performance and safety. Use simple, practical frameworks to give timely, constructive feedback that strengthens clinical practice, reduces errors, and builds confidence in others.
  5. Prioritise effectively in high-pressure environments. Make better decisions about what matters most, managing competing demands while maintaining quality of care and personal wellbeing.
  6. Adapt leadership style to individuals and situations. Recognise different communication styles, strengths, and needs within the team, and flex their approach to lead more effectively across diverse healthcare settings
