Bridging Cultures, Building Trust

Why is this course important?

Statistics:

  • March 2023 - 26.4% of the workforce across NHS Trusts - black, minority ethnic (increase of 13% compared to 2022)
  • Increasing representation of BME at VSM (from 10.2% to 11.2%)
  • 16.6% of BME staff reported discrimination than the 6.7% of white staff.
  • Only 46.6% of BME staff felt their Trust provided equal opportunities for growth and promotion (59.1% of white staff felt this)

By the end of the 2-day programme, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the core components of psychological safety and apply practical strategies to create a more trusting, open, and high-performing team environment.
  2. Identify the subtle dynamics of power and privilege within NHS teams and use appropriate types of power to build trust, inclusion, and healthy influence.
  3. Analyse real healthcare-specific scenarios to diagnose psychological safety, belonging, or cultural barriers—and propose effective, evidence-based responses.
  4. Demonstrate increased cultural intelligence by recognising key cultural patterns, adapting communication styles, and navigating cross-cultural interactions with confidence.
  5. Create a concise, actionable plan to strengthen team belonging, enhance collaboration across cultures, and embed psychologically safe behaviours into everyday practice.

Well, it helps with diversity, equity and inclusion, however, this course creates a safe, and fun environment in which to explore the beauty (and sometimes confusion) of our diverse cultures.

This course is less about creating fear of saying the wrong thing, and more about the fun of learning to be curious.
