Delegating Well & Giving Effective Feedback

Two NHS nurses discuss patient care in a hospital setting.

Why is this course important?

Statistics:

  • Teams with effective leadership and delegation have up to 25–30% lower mortality rates in hospital settings
(West et al., The King’s Fund / NHS leadership research)
  • Over 40% of NHS staff report feeling unable to cope with workload demands
    (NHS Staff Survey 2023
  • Poor communication and lack of feedback contribute to ~70% of serious adverse events
(Joint Commission – widely cited in healthcare safety research)
  • Staff who receive regular, high-quality feedback are 3.6x more likely to be engaged at work
    (Gallup workplace research)

Impact:

  • Delegation and feedback done well make a significant difference to patient outcomes.
  • Inability to delegate effectively is leading to higher workload and burnout for both managers and team.
  • A lack of helpful feedback leads to increased disengagement and higher chance of attrition.
  • Done well, will improve team ownership.

By the end of the 2-day programme, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of a Growth Mindset for delegation and feedback, as individuals and teams and have some practical steps to develop that.
  2. Set clear, assertive boundaries and make assertive requests  using ‘I’ language to express needs, boundaries and concerns without blame, applying practiced conversational scripts.
  3. Give and receive feedback that improves performance while preserving relationships, using a clear, practical feedback framework to deliver feedback that is specific, balanced and actionable, and to respond to feedback with curiosity rather than defensiveness.
  4. Plan, practise and conduct difficult conversations with confidence and structure, applying the SPIN Framework to prepare, initiate, navigate and conclude challenging discussions — including performance issues, behavioural concerns -  and leaving with at least one real conversation plan ready for immediate use.

  • Give honest feedback that improves performance without creating defensiveness

Feedback from the Course

"Really like the SPIN framework for difficult conversations. That is a tool I will use."

"SPIN! The best thing that I have learned. It is very applicable to my day to day job and would be a good approach when facing difficult situations and behaviours of staff or patients."

“One thing I will do differently is to be more assertive when I need support, rather than keeping quiet."

Absolutely! In fact, having both clinical and non-clinical participants will help open up conversations around negotiation as often it is negotiations between clinical and non-clinical staff that cause conflict.
